Congratulations to Archway’s LINC class in Mission, BC for winning this year’s Literacy Week Contest in the West Coast Reader (WCR)! The WCR is a local newspaper and online resource designed to support reading skills for adult English learners. Every year they put out a contest with a theme. This year’s topic was: How do you make mealtime family learning time?

Our CLB 1-3 LINC class enjoyed reading the article in the January edition of the WCR titled, “Make Mealtime Family Learning Time.”  The learners shared their traditional dishes they like to cook and eat together with their families, speaking in a variety of languages as they eat together. They also shared that mealtimes are times to learn about how each other’s day is going and how they are feeling. Parents like to ask their children about their homework and what they learned in school. Some noted that they learn new words from their children and grandchildren that way.

Each participant wrote one sentence about how they make mealtime family learning time. Uliana, an artist from Ukraine, volunteered to create a collage of the students’ writing. We then submitted a photo of the group holding up their work. Being able to share culture in a collaborative way was rewarding in itself, but winning gave the class an unexpected way to celebrate literacy.

The prize is a $100 gift card for Indigo bookstores. The learners plan to purchase a new set of phonics and grammar-focused books for the class.

You can read more about the winning entries and other fantastic articles for levels CLB 1-6 in the March edition of the West Coast Reader.
