Hiking on Sumas (Semá:th) Mountain
Archway English students had a chance to explore Sumas Mountain in Abbotsford, BC during a recent field trip. Some of the students who came on the hike had never been hiking before in their lives, and they were excited to experience it for the first time. The sky was thick with forest fire smoke, but that didn’t limit the awesomeness of the adventure. The view at the top wasn’t as clear as other days, but the students were amazed by what they could see. The thick layer of smoke resting in the valley made it seem like they were the only people in the world, and strangely peaceful and quiet.
On the way up the trail, one of the students was surprised when a small bear ran across her path. She had never seen a bear in the wild and was amazed at how quickly he could run. While most everyone hoped to see the bear, it was not spotted again. There were other memorable fauna and flora along the trail, including a mouse, interesting coloured leaves, and tall trees. Everyone was in awe at the size of the boulders and cliffs along the trail. The trail itself was not too difficult to follow, although it was helpful to have a map along as there were many side trails to choose from.
